Due to its proximity to the Black Sea, summer and winter temperatures tend to be several degrees higher than in the rest of Ukraine. The climate is moderately continental, with a short, mild winter and a long, hot summer.
In the western steppe area the temperatures are the highest: there are often droughts and dry winds. The climate of the Danube and Dniestr Deltas is different from surrounding areas. Daily variations of air temperature are smaller, and the average humidity is higher than in adjacent steppe areas. Along the Black Sea coast the climate is milder and breezier.
During the tourist season, from May till the end of September, temperatures average between 200 and 270C with a maximum of 300-350C. The sea temperature is from 180 to 260C in summer. In winter, the temperature rarely drops below 00C in daytime. The sea may freeze for a few days, but sea traffic never stops. Yearly rainfall is from 350 mm. in the south to 460 mm. in the north. |
