Due to its proximity to the Black Sea, summer and winter temperatures tend to be several degrees higher than in the rest of Ukraine. The climate is moderately continental, with a short, mild winter and a long, hot summer.

In the western steppe area the temperatures are the highest: there are often droughts and dry winds. The climate of the Danube and Dniestr Deltas is different from surrounding areas. Daily variations of air temperature are smaller, and the average humidity is higher than in adjacent steppe areas. Along the Black Sea coast the climate is milder and breezier.

During the tourist season, from May till the end of September, temperatures average between 200 and 270C with a maximum of 300-350C. The sea temperature is from 180 to 260C in summer. In winter, the temperature rarely drops below 00C in daytime. The sea may freeze for a few days, but sea traffic never stops. Yearly rainfall is from 350 mm. in the south to 460 mm. in the north.

The northern part of the Region is situated in a forest-steppe zone; the southern part is in a steppe zone. The average annual temperature varies from 8.2°C (46.8°F) in the north to 10.8°C (51.4°F) in the south. The season lasts 180 to 210 days. The average annual rainfall varies from 340 mm. in the south to 460 mm. in the north.

The city of Odessa has a relatively warm, dry climate, with January temperatures averaging -2°C (28.4°F) and July temperatures, 22°C (71.6°F) annual rain is some 351 mm. The moderate climate and coastal lagoons nearby have given rise to beach resorts that are famous for therapeutic mud baths. Therapeutic ingredients in the mud along with the mild climate and beautiful beaches attract vacationers and patients seeking treatment of various ailments: from arthritis to tuberculosis to skin disorders.

Today numerous resorts, beauty spas, and sanatoriums dot a 25 km. stretch of coast from the village of Fontanka north of Odessa to Lebedivka to the south. They attract hundreds of thousands of vacationers and medical patients yearly who are seeking health and beauty in hydro and mud treatments.
